XXII Ankulegi Anthropology Conference (2019)
“Anthropology in the face of death”
San Sebastián, 12 April 2019
Zoé de Kerangat and Miriam Saqqa Carazo will take part in the XXII Ankulegi Anthropology Conference, “Anthropology in the face of death”, which will be held on 12 April at the San Telmo Museum in San Sebastián. The conference was organised by the Ankulegi association and the Department of Philosophy of Values and Social Anthropology of the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU).
Death is present in all societies and times, although, like any biological and social process at the same time, it manifests itself in very different ways depending on the cultural and historical context. The XXII Ankulegi Anthropology Conference, linked to the exhibition “Heriotza. Ante la muerte”, organised by the San Telmo Museum, will focus this year on death and its multiple representations and meanings: How is death faced and how is it communicated? What form do funeral ceremonies and rituals take? What are the characteristics of the process of mourning, mourning or the search for meaning and recomposition after a death? What relationship do the living establish with corpses? How are the dead dismissed and how are the dead remembered? What is their presence in society (symbolic, ghostly, spiritual, festive)?
